Demo apps using fast app switching like a pro with OBS

When doing software demos, things can be very complex. You might need to include multiple apps in the demo, and with every transition from one app to the next, it can easily create a clunky demo. You might switch from PowerPoint to web browser, to some software on your computer, and this might be moving in and out of full screen, moving windows that can be distracting to audience members when you are really trying to make a great impression.

In this video, I walk through how you can demo apps using OBS as a fast app switcher between different apps when doing demos. OBS is a free software. It is most common users is gamers who post their gameplay on Twitch and YouTube, but the same tools can be really useful for creating professional-looking software demos.

One of the ways that I do this is using a technique I call “quadrants” which involves using a 4K monitor split into 4 quadrants and splitting my demo into different scenes I can easily switch to. The primary benefits of this approach is:

  • Being able to see each part of your demo so that you can adjust quickly.
  • Removes distractions from your audience members
  • Makes your demo look more professional and look much tighter
  • Can help you mix media from live demo and presentations like PowerPoint seamlessly

You only have one chance to make a great impression with your software demos. This method to demo apps using OBS helps you create a tighter demo and gives you a toolbox to create professional looking demos whether they are live, over Microsoft Teams, Zoom, or a stage presentation.
